The FoMO Phenomenon: Adaptation of the Przybylski Scale into the Kazakh Language

Abstract

The article presents the results of the linguistic and cultural adaptation of the FoMO (Fear of Missing Out) scale developed by A.K.Przybylski, which is designed to measure the FoMO phenomenon that has become increasingly relevant in the context of the widespread use of social media. The aim of the study is to determine the content validity of the Kazakh-language version of the FoMO scale and to evaluate its initial psychometric properties. During the study, the scale items were translated into the Kazakh language, and a content validity assessment was conducted with the participation of expert specialists. In accordance with the methodology of Polit and Beck, content validity indices (I-CVI, S-CVI/Ave) were calculated, demonstrating a very high level of content validity. A pilot testing of the instrument was carried out online with the participation of 34 respondents aged 20-23. Descriptive statistics, distribution characteristics, and internal consistency indicators were analyzed. The results showed high reliability of the Kazakh version of the FoMO scale (Cronbach’s α = 0.878) and confirmed that all items were consistent with the measured construct. In conclusion, the Kazakh-adapted version of the FoMO scale is recommended as a scientific and diagnostic tool for studying social media usage patterns, digital behavior, and the psychological consequences of the FoMO phenomenon among young people in Kazakhstan. The obtained results allow the scale to be used in further extended psychometric validation and applied psychological research.
